Do I Want To Talk With My Animals?

Cat Assisting TYping

When I told our animal family what the subject of this week’s blog is, they were fascinated and appalled at the same time.

”What do you mean ‘some people don’t like to talk with their animals?’ “ They asked? “How can we get a point across if we don’t talk?”

Then they all looked at Ry, who literally talks All. The. Time. He is the chattiest cat I’ve even known. You should hear him in the morning, when it’s breakfast time. Sounds like a siren. Meooooowwwww! Meoooowwwww! Meoooowwww! He has assigned himself the duty of making sure everyone in the house gets fed - even the dogs.

Ry and his best canine buddy.

Of course, Niko is his best canine friend, so I can see where he’d have his buddy’s best interests at heart. Plus if the dogs get fed, the cats get fed. Win win.

I’ve had people tell me they’re reluctant to talk with their animals because they’re afraid of what the animal might say.

Hmmmm. Have you been beating your animal again?

Probably not. Most humans don’t think too highly of themselves (have you tried not to listen to that critic that lives in your head?), so they naturally assume their pets feel the same way.

Wrong.

Our pets LOVE us - even the ones who don’t seem as demonstrative, likes cats and maybe snakes. They are with us for a reason - because it’s a great place to be. They aren’t judgmental. They love us because they see all the way into our soul in a way humans have forgotten.

I’m not talking about the food, the comfy beds, the trips in the truck (if you’re our three dogs - good grief, we can’t go anywhere without taking them along). I’m talking about the fact that on a soul level, they are with us all the way. They want their people to have the best life ever.

Two of the three eager for a ride.

Hit it, Ern!”

Sometimes they do some pretty wonky things to get the point across, but a lot of that has to do with us not listening.

Even I, who talk to animals for a living, sometimes forget to listen. And when I forget, it’s not pretty.

Most people go through an intermediary (like me) because it can be hard to hear your own animal without your own stuff getting in the way. Even I have colleagues that I’ll ask to interpret the hard questions.

When your animal is moving toward end of life, that is a hard time. We want them to live longer. But what if they’re suffering? What if the pain is too much? What if they’ve been trying to tell you that they’re done, but you don’t want to hear it, so you do everything in your power to keep them alive? Sometimes they just want to let go of that old body so they can go off into the spirit world and hang out for a while, and think about returning in a new, freshly minted body that doesn’t leak pee everywhere and can once again jump a five foot fence (Niko. Cover your ears.) That’s the time, if you feel like your own feelings are getting in the way, to call in someone else. I’ve done it plenty of times.

But for the day to day stuff, if you’re willing to work on letting go of preconceived notions and really listen to your animals, you can talk with them ourselves.

Anyone can do it. It takes practice, just like learning how to cross a river in the best place, or bake a cake. But it can be done. Ya gotta trust yourself, and the process.

If you want to learn how to talk with your animal, or at least feel closer to them, you can take my Intro to Animal Communication Class. The next one is Saturday, June 1. If you don’t, that’s cool too.

Either way, remember your animal has plenty to say. Open your heart, and listen.
